To play horseball all you need are the following -

  • Horse (or pony depending on your age)
  • Pick up strap
  • A horseball
  • Standing martingale

In order to play, horses and ponies also need to have bandages and over reach boots on all four legs and feet.

The pick up strap is a leather strap which goes under the girth of the horse and attaches both stirrups together. This piece of tack allows the rider to, as safely as possible, pick up the ball from the ground whilst still mounted. These can be purchased from the club and are a must if you want to play horseball (you can borrow one if you are coming down for a trial session).

The actual horseball is basically a size 4 football which is placed into a specially designed harness with handles on it. These handles allow the players to throw, catch and pick up the ball during the game. Unlike the pick up strap, you do not need to buy these individually but are a great purchase if you want to practice at home and / or get your horse or pony used to the ball. Again, contact the club if you want to purchase a horseball.
